June 2, 2009, In response to the June 2, 2009 AP article: Senator: Highway fund will go broke in August, Janet Kavinoky, Executive Director of the ATM Coalition released the following statement:
"The acknowledgement at today's Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) hearing that the Highway Trust Fund (HTF) will once again sink into the red is an unfortunate reminder of the very serious funding challenges facing our nation's transportation system. Just last September, Congress had to make an 8 billion dollar infusion to keep this important infrastructure account in the black – and now just a year later another multibillion dollar infusion is required to keep it out of the red. Continuing the status quo is not an option. Now is the time for Congress to address long-term transportation planning and investment needs for our roads, bridges and public transit. The bottom line: More revenue is needed to ensure a solvent Highway Trust Fund that keeps America moving safely and efficiently into the future."
