WASHINGTON, D.C.- Janet Kavinoky, Executive Director of the Americans for Transportation Mobility (ATM) Coalition, issued the following statement on final passage today of the House-Senate compromise of H.R. 1 the “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009,” which included billions of dollars in funding for ready-to-go highways and public transportation projects around the country: “Rebuilding America’s transportation infrastructure is a critical part of helping our economy recover, and Congress made the right decision by including additional funding for vital road, bridge and transit projects that will jump-start the economy. “Our transportation infrastructure is the physical platform of the American economy. Investments in transportation infrastructure are investments in our economy, safety and way of life. “While the economic recovery legislation is a vital first step to shore up our ailing economy, Congress will need to complete its work later this year by providing the policy and programmatic reforms as well as long-term funding needed for highways and public transportation by passing long-term transportation legislation with increased and improved investment. It is imperative the federal government also look to infrastructure planning and investment as a way to facilitate long-term economic recovery and competiveness.” ABOUT US: The Americans for Transportation Mobility Coalition is a nationwide effort by business, labor, transportation organizations and concerned citizens to advocate for increased federal investment in the nation’s aging and overburdened transportation system.
