2.19.10 Virginia Senate Weighs Indexing Gas Tax to Fuel Efficiency

February 19: Virginia Senate weighs indexing gas tax to fuel efficiency from The Richmond Times-Dispatch

  • Gov. Bob McDonnell may oppose any tax increase to balance Virginia's struggling two-year budget, but the idea of implementing an adjusted increase in the gas tax to keep from losing existing transportation revenue is gaining bipartisan traction in the Virginia Senate. Senate Bill 343 does not take the tack of previously unsuccessful gas-tax legislation, which proposed increasing Virginia's levy of 17.5 cents per gallon by a penny or two per gallon over time. Rather, the bill would index the tax on gas every year to correspond with increases in the fuel efficiency of motor vehicles, as determined by the federal government's fuel-economy standards.
